March 10, 2010 Workshop and Overall Conference Review
2010 NABCJ Virginia Chapters Annual Training Institute and Conference
The 2010 NABCJ Virginia Chapters Tenth Annual Training Institute and Conference was held March, 10-12, 2010 at the Hampton Embassy Suites and Convention Center, Hampton Virginia. Our theme was “Reflecting on Our Past and Embracing Our Future-Celebrating Our 10th Annual Training Institute”
This year’s conference was particularly special in light of the economy and the many cutbacks. While the Virginia Department of Corrections has and continues to be very supportive of NABCJ, funding was not available this year to sponsor attendees. Despite this, the conference exceeded its previous years in attendance. Once again, it proves that when you are providing quality training, individuals are willing to make the sacrifice to attend. The conference committee appreciates the commitment and will continue its efforts to provide an outstanding opportunity to enrich the personal and professional lives of its attendees.
The conference was convened on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 by our conference chair, Eddie Pearson-Warden-Powhatan Correctional Center. The presentation of colors was done by the color guard of Southampton Detention Center. The National Anthem was sung by Chrishana Frye, Virginia State University Graduate Student. Our invocation was done by Earl Barksdale-Warden Dillwyn Correctional Center. Welcome remarks were provided by Malcolm Taylor-Eastern Regional Director-Community Corrections; B.J. Roberts-Sheriff- Hampton Sheriff’s Office and a representative from the Hampton Police Department. Nikita Murphy-Richmond Chapter President and Therapeutic counselor of Sussex II State Prison introduced our guest speaker, Jennie Amison-Executive Director of Gemeinshaft Home, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Closing remarks were provided by James Camache-Deputy Director –Virginia Department of Corrections and our own NABCJ National President, Robert L. Matthews.
At the conclusion of the opening session, the attendees participated in a joint summit “Personal Growth and Development” facilitated by Jamilla Burney-Divens and William “Bill” Hicks. This session proved to be very interactive and inspiring. We concluded Wednesday evening with a gathering during which the attendees had an opportunity to network with individuals from throughout the state and enjoy good food, music and friendship. It is always an honor to have the National President, Robert L. Matthews and our Director of Association Development, Carlyle Holder to join us during this conference.
Thursday morning began promptly at 8:30am with a variety of workshops addressing a number of topics that benefited the attendees personally and professionally. We were then provided a delicious luncheon and had an opportunity to hear from our National President, Robert L. Matthews. Mr. Matthews thanked the chapters for all the work they do and expressed his appreciation for having chapters who are so active and willing to serve. He told the attendees that he considered Virginia to be his second home. Upon conclusion of the luncheon, the workshops promptly resumed with an opportunity to gain more knowledge.
Thursday evening is always the time for fun and the YEARLY DANCE. In celebration of our tenth anniversary, the theme for the dance was “Night with the Stars”. Our creative genius Nikita Murphy and her team decorated the room so that we thought WE WERE THE STARS. Attendees attended the dance during which numerous door prizes were distributed. However, there is a catch! One MUST dance for their prize. That’s ALL I can say about that. You have to be there to see it!
On Friday morning, we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast during which time our chapter presidents provided us with updates on their chapter activities. The breakfast is chaired by our very own William “Bill” Hicks, who always stresses the importance of helping one another and particularly reaching out to our students. As has become tradition, Mr. Hicks auctions an item with the proceeds going to the students. This is the time when NABCJ members can truly be proud of themselves. At the end of the auction $700 had been raised which was donated to the students to attend the 2010 NABCJ National Conference in Atlanta GA.
Once again, the Virginia State Chapters of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice hosted an outstanding training institute and conference. Kudos to the conference committee for the magnificent job that they do.
